CHAPTER 20

I followed the rainbow path into the Schnockered Unicorn, taking the branch that led directly to the large, circular bar at the center of the floor. The place was as packed as the bouncer would allow, which was busy but not exceptionally crowded. Plenty of open tables ringed the bar, while booths covered the outer suitably darker and more private perimeter.

The setup reminded me of Cestus, except it was a lot less shady. Several groups of patrons circled the pool tables on my right, while others danced in and around another holographic unicorn on my left. Both men and women wearing glittering bodysuits and wigs with long, colorful manes and horns drifted through the crowd serving drinks.

I moved off the rainbow path onto an etched metal floor and dropped onto one of the stools. It was only a few seconds before the bartender made her way over to me.

“Nice coat,” she said with a smile, though I questioned her sincerity. “You got that at Yimbo’s, just across the mod, didn’t you?”

“I did,” I admitted.

“My friend had his eye on that coat. He couldn’t afford it, though.”

“Yeah, it didn’t come cheap.”

“What are you drinking tonight?”

“I’m not sure. I’m looking for something exotic. Something maybe I can only get here.”

“First timer, huh? I know exactly what you need.” She reached under the bar to grab a glass.

“I’m also looking for Macey,” I added.

She paused to glance at me. “You’re looking for Macey?”

“Why is that a surprise?”

“You’re so young.”

“I’m old enough to be looking for Macey.”

She laughed as she removed the cup from the bartop. “You don’t want this if you want to talk to Macy.” Her hands lingered out of sight, and my phone vibrated as a payment request came through. I pulled it out of my pocket to look.

“Three hundred?” I said.

“That’s a nice coat,” she repeated.

I accepted the request. She pointed to one of the booths along the wall. “Who gave you the name, by the way?”

“I don’t know her name. But she didn’t give it to me. I’m going broke just trying to get where I want to be.”

Her amusement intensified. “Welcome to Windfall. Nice doing business with you.”

I smiled back at her and made my way to a table along the wall where an elderly woman sat, nursing a green-colored drink with an umbrella in it. “You’re Macey?” I asked when I reached her, finally noticing there was something alive swimming around in her drink.

The woman had to be in her sixties. Her short hair was peach fuzzed on one side. She had a dozen rings in each ear, and she looked as if her lithe curves had been poured into her Hijun hide leather jumpsuit. Stiletto-heeled knee-high boots rounded out the senior citizen cool look.

“Who’s asking?”

“My name’s Ben,” I said. “I’m looking for information. I hear you’re good at finding it.”

“Sit down, Ben." She motioned to the opposite side of her booth. “So, what kind of information are you looking for?”

“I’m looking for a specific starship,” I said, sliding into the booth and folding my hands on the table.
